IEEE Gwangju Section

In year 2015, the Section offered six technical and social meetings. Most technical activities were given at the campus of GIST, Korea. Also, one international conference, ICCAIS, of which IEEE served as a technical sponsor, was held in GIST. The table below in this page is the list of Section Executive Committee members. Prof. Minjae Lee, GIST Korea, has joined the IEEE Gwangju Section executive committee as Membership Development Chair of Gwangju Section. The Section will promote membership development by continuing to organize social and technical meetings, give student awards in local technical meetings, encourage students to form a chapter of their own, and organize local sports activities in the name of IEEE. In addition, the Section will also aim to leverage IEEE Distinguished Lecturer programs to bring world class scholars to Gwangju and give the students the opportunity to have close interaction with them.

1. Prof. Hosung Park, Assistant Professor, Chonnam National University. April 13th, 2015
   • Prof. Hosung Park who has newly joined Chonnam National University. Prof. Park is interested in wireless communications and channel coding. In this talk, he introduced several method for interference management and his works on sliding window coded modulation. After the seminar, the members of the IEEE Gwangju Sections continued discussion with Prof. Park over the dinner.
2. IEEE board meeting
   • There was a small meeting including IEEE Gwangju Section Chain Prof. Heung-No Lee, Secretary/Treasurer Prof. Jong Won Shin, and Membership Development Chair Prof. Minjae Lee. Plans for membership development activities in 2015 and 2016 were mainly discussed. Attendees: Prof. Heung-No Lee, Prof. Jong Won Shin, Prof. Minjae Lee
3. Dr. Jun-Hwan Lee, Senior Research, ETRI, Korea. October 1st 2015
   • Dr. Lee gave a seminar titled “Worldwide 5G activities and millimeter wave communication techniques”. In this seminar, recent activities about 5G standard of ITU-R and 3GPP were talked. He had a special interest on the global 5G cooperative system. Millimeter wave communication, which is a key technology of 5G communication, was also discussed with some examples like Giga KOREA project.
4. Dr. Te-Won Lee, President, Qualcomm Korea, October 7th, 2015
   • Dr. Te-Won Lee, who is IEEE Fellow and currently the president of Qualcomm Korea, a world leading company in mobile chipsets and modems. Although the details of the talk cannot be included in the report since it may contain confidential information, many students attended this seminar, learned about what is going on in the industry, project their future in the industry, and made a lot of questions.
5. Dr. Jae-Kyoung Ahn, Xilinx, San Jose. October 19th 2015
   • Dr. Jae-Gyung Ahn, who is currently working with Xilinx, San Jose, CA. In Xilinx, he is responsible for Design For Reliability (DFR) and evaluation of product-level reliability. Since his presentation covered practical aspects of reliability modeling, typically investigated in the individual device level, it was a really valuable opportunity for students to gain a new insight on the practical reliability modeling.
6. Dr. Sana Ullah, Research Scientist, CISTER Research Centre, ISEP/IPP, PORTO, Portugal. December 11th 2015
   • Dr. Ullah who is a research scientist of CISTER Research Centre, Portugal. He gave a seminar titled “IEEE 802.15.6 MAC Overview”. In this seminar IEEE 802.15.6 standard of wireless body area network (WBAN) was covered. He introduced growing needs of WBAN and gave executive summary about IEEE 802.15.6 MAC method. In addition, he pointed out the theoretical limits of IEEE 802.15.6 and the needs of further research.
7. Prof. Dong Kook Kim, Professor, Chonnam National University, December 23rd 2015
   • Prof. Dong Kook Kim who is a Professor in Chonnam National University. Prof. Kim originally majored in speech signal processing centered on automatic speech recognition, and now is interested in many areas of speech and audio processing. In this talk, for the entry-level researchers, Prof. Kim lectured about latent variable model and Hidden Markov model with an application of large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR).
8. Dr. Woohyung Lim, Manager, SK Telecom, December 28th 2015
   • Dr. Woohyung Lim, who is working as a Manager for the SK Telecom, the biggest wireless carrier company in Korea. In this talk, the weighted finite state transducer (WFST) is introduced for the entry-level researchers with easy examples for the speech recognition task. Indeed, several different module in the speech recognizer can be described as a WFST and then optimized altogether. Also he joined the dinner with IEEE members for the follow up discussion.
9. Dr. Sungho Lee, Managerial Researcher, KETI, December 29th, 2015
   • Dr. Sungho Lee, who is working as a Managerial Researcher for KETI , In this talk, several industrial standards for wireless power transfer are introduced such as WPC, PMA and A4WP. Especially he shared circuit design experience and difficulties regarding wireless power transfer. He also briefly explained rectifier designs and methods to satisfy stability condition for different Low voltage drop regulators(LDO)
10. Dr. Jongsun Kim , Associate professor, Hongik University, December 31st, 2015
    • Professor Jongsun Kim, who is with Hongik University, In this talk, he began with fundamentals regarding clock generation methods and comparison between different architectures. Expecially a multiplying delay locked loop(MDLL) is explained compared to phase locked loop(PLL) and its advantages and disadvantages are explained as introduction . Recent advances to improve jitter performance are also introduced and his major contribution regarding to fast clock edge selection scheme are shared with attendees.
